For tours and transfers in Austria, a coach above 3.5 tonnes maximum permissible laden mass needs a GO-Box and pays a distance-based GO toll on motorways and expressways. A car vignette is not sufficient. Everything else, permits, access and schedules, TOUR LOUNGE plans as part of the tour.

Austria is an EU member state. Instruments, backline and equipment travel without an ATA carnet as long as the tour stays inside the EU. Compared with Swiss or British legs that saves several days of lead time.

Toll for coaches: GO-Box instead of vignette

In Austria all motor vehicles with a technically permissible laden mass above 3.5 tonnes are subject to the distance-based GO toll, coaches included. It is settled through an on-board unit, the GO-Box, fitted before the first journey and obtained from sales points in Austria and abroad.

For tour planning this means the toll is not something solved at the border crossing. It belongs to vehicle disposition and we settle it before the first leg.

Driving and rest times on Austrian legs

European social rules under Regulation (EC) No 561/2006 apply to touring in Austria. In occasional services, which is what a tour is, the weekly rest period may be postponed for up to twelve consecutive days under the conditions of Article 8(6a).

That rule was amended by Regulation (EU) 2024/1258; since 22 May 2024 it also expressly covers national occasional services. On multi-day tours with lay days and a return leg this is the difference between a driver change and a continuous team.

We plan every leg against these rules before the schedule reaches the production. Where the day runs long, a second driver, a driver change or a different hotel choice enters the plan, not an optimistic timetable.

Venues and typical legs

The main venues sit close together: Vienna, Salzburg, Linz, Graz, Innsbruck, Bregenz and Klagenfurt are, apart from the western axis, almost all within four hours of driving. For ensembles that means short travel days, early arrivals and sound checks without time pressure.

Frequent connections in our tour plans are Munich to Salzburg, Salzburg to Vienna, Vienna to Graz and Innsbruck to Bregenz. Many tours combine Austria with southern Germany, South Tyrol, Czechia or Hungary; inside the Schengen area border crossings cost no planning time.

In city centres and at historic venues, access decides the day, not driving time. Coach registration, standing position and waiting area are agreed with the promoter or the venue before the tour.

Instruments, equipment and vehicles

Inside the EU instruments, backline and equipment travel without customs documents. Harps, double basses, cellos, timpani and percussion still follow a fixed loading plan: what goes in the luggage bay, what on the adjacent seat, what in a support vehicle is settled before departure.

On the vehicle side we work with coaches, midibuses, minibuses and vans, plus support vehicles and trailers for percussion. The category follows line-up, instrumentation and leg length, not whatever happens to be available.

How we work together

Agencies, productions and ensembles send us the draft tour plan. We check the legs for feasibility, propose vehicles and driver staffing and reply with an indicative quote within 24 hours.

Clients with recurring demand in Austria and neighbouring countries get fixed conditions and committed availability through the partner programme. Each tour is then simply called off.

Does a coach need a vignette in Austria?

Who handles tolls, GO-Box and permits?

TOUR LOUNGE. Tolls, GO-Box, access permits and coach registrations at venues and hotels are part of the organisation and never land on the tour manager.

How long may a day leg in Austria be?

The limit is set by the driving and rest times of Regulation (EC) No 561/2006, not by kilometres. In practice most Austrian connections work comfortably within one driving day; where sound check and performance stretch the day we plan a second driver or a driver change.

Does the 12-day rule apply to tours in Austria?

Yes, in occasional services under the conditions of Article 8(6a) of Regulation (EC) No 561/2006. Through Regulation (EU) 2024/1258 it also expressly covers national occasional services since 22 May 2024.

Do we need an ATA carnet for instruments?

Not inside the EU. Austria is an EU member state, so instruments and equipment travel without customs documents. The question only arises once the tour leaves the EU, for example into Switzerland or the United Kingdom; we flag it early and coordinate with your production management.

Do you also arrange single transfers in Austria, without a full tour?

Yes. Airport, hotel and venue transfers, festival shuttles and runs to TV and promo appointments are booked individually by agencies and productions.

Do you run sleeper buses?

No. TOUR LOUNGE organises ground mobility by day: coaches, midibuses, minibuses, vans and support vehicles. The production sleeps in hotels.
